Why Are They Called Teddy Bears?

Teddy bears are named after U.S. President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt, after a 1902 newspaper cartoon showed him refusing to shoot a bear on a hunting trip in Mississippi. A Brooklyn shopkeeper made a stuffed bear and called it "Teddy's bear". If you love teddy bears, you're an arctophile, from the Greek arctos (bear) and philos (loving).
