Why is the Tintin rocket red and white?

Hergé drew the moon rocket with a red-and-white checked pattern for the two-part story told in Destination Moon (1953) and Explorers on the Moon (1954). The pattern made the rocket easy to follow on the page, and it became the best-known image in the series.
