Pool Table Room Size Chart: How Much Space Do You Need?

A pool table needs its playing surface plus one full cue length of clear space on every side. With a standard 147 cm cue, a 7 ft table needs a room of about 4.9 x 3.9 m, an 8 ft table about 5.2 x 4.1 m, and a 9 ft table about 5.5 x 4.2 m. If your room is smaller, a shorter cue or a smaller table solves it.

How much room do you need for a pool table?

The chart below uses the playing surface of each table size and adds one cue length at each end and each side.

Table size Playing surface Room with 147 cm cue Room with 122 cm cue
7 ft 198 x 99 cm 4.9 x 3.9 m 4.4 x 3.4 m
8 ft 224 x 112 cm 5.2 x 4.1 m 4.7 x 3.6 m
9 ft 254 x 127 cm 5.5 x 4.2 m 5.0 x 3.7 m

Table sizes and playing surfaces are explained on Wikipedia's billiard table page. Always check the exact playing dimensions on the product page, because design tables vary.

What is the formula for pool table room size?

  1. Take the length of the playing surface.
  2. Add twice the length of your cue. A standard cue is about 147 cm (58 inches).
  3. Repeat for the width.

Example for an 8 ft table: 224 cm + (2 x 147 cm) = 518 cm long, and 112 cm + (2 x 147 cm) = 406 cm wide.

What if the room is too small?

  • Use a short cue. A 122 cm cue saves about 50 cm in each direction and is fine for the occasional tight shot.
  • Choose a smaller table. A 7 ft table plays well at home and is the standard size in many bars.
  • Check the obstacles. A pillar or a sofa on one side matters less than a wall along the full length.
  • Consider a convertible table. Some design tables take a top and become a dining table, so the room does two jobs.

What else should you measure?

  • The route in. Doors, stairs, lifts and tight corners. Slate beds are heavy and often arrive in sections.
  • The floor. It should be level and able to carry the weight.
  • The light. A lamp centred over the table avoids shadows on the cloth. See our lighting collection.
