New Year's Eve 2026 at Home: Games, Table and Countdown Ideas
New Year's Eve 2026 falls on Thursday, December 31. To host it well at home, plan the evening in three parts: a long dinner, games from about 10 pm, and a countdown tradition at midnight. Games fill the hours before midnight better than anything else, because everyone can join and no one has to perform.
How do you plan New Year's Eve at home?
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 8 pm | Guests arrive, drinks and something small to eat |
| 8:30 pm | Dinner, taken slowly |
| 10 pm | Games: one easy game, then a main game |
| 11:45 pm | Clear the table, prepare the countdown |
| Midnight | Countdown and a tradition |
| After midnight | One quick game to close the night |
Which games work best on New Year's Eve?
- For 2: dominoes or backgammon. Read our luxury backgammon guide.
- For 4: card games, or four in a row as a quick tournament.
- For 6 to 8: poker, where everyone plays at once and the chips make it feel like an event.

- Go darker than Christmas. Black, gold or deep blue instead of red and green.
- Light it low. Candles down the middle and a small lamp at each end.
- Leave room for games. Keep the centre of the table clear after dinner.

- Spain: twelve grapes. One grape for each stroke of midnight, eaten in time with the clock, for luck in each month of the year. The custom is explained on Wikipedia's Twelve Grapes page. Have the grapes peeled and counted before the countdown.
- Germany: Dinner for One. Many households watch the short British comedy sketch on New Year's Eve, a tradition that goes back decades.
- Everywhere: a toast to the year ahead. Ask each guest for one plan for 2027.
