Christmas Matchboxes: A Gift Guide
A beautifully illustrated matchbox is one of the easiest gifts of the festive season: useful every time a candle or fire is lit, and pretty enough to leave out on the mantelpiece long after the matches are gone. Here are the Christmas and Hanukkah designs from Archivist we have in stock, and how to choose between them.
Giant Box or Long Matches?
Archivist's festive designs come in two formats:
- Giant box: 150 matches, each 280 mm long, in a 300 × 190 × 60 mm box. A statement piece for a coffee table or hearth.
- Long matches box: 45 matches, each 280 mm long, in a slim 290 × 60 × 50 mm box. A smaller gift and an easy stocking filler.
Both use the same extra-long matches, so they reach deep candle jars, hurricanes and fireplaces. They're all safety matches, which only light on the box's striking strip.

Christmas Window
The Christmas Window giant matchbox is the showpiece of the range: a large festive box filled with colourful extra-long matches. It's a good choice for a host gift or for anyone with a fireplace.
Winter Snowscape
The Winter Snowscape features a nostalgic winter scene inspired by classic Christmas cards, in the slimmer long-matches box.
Santa Trains
Santa Trains shows Santa and his friends, designed by Tammis Keefe. At €16 it's an easy stocking filler.
Christmas Tree
The Christmas Tree box has a vintage-style tree design and is the most affordable festive option in the range.
Hanukkah
The Hanukkah matches feature the nine-branched menorah and its Shamash candle, made for lighting candles through the Festival of Lights.

FAQ
How long are the matches?
All the festive designs use 280 mm matches. Giant boxes hold 150; long-matches boxes hold 45.
Are they safe to give as gifts?
They're safety matches, which only light on the box's own striking strip. As with any matches, keep them away from children.
Can I display the box after the matches are used?
Yes. The illustrated boxes are designed to be kept and displayed.
